How Important is it to Eat Organic Food? Are the Benefits Worth the Cost?

Our ancestors ate a totally organic diet. Current farming strategies that employ GMOs (genetically modified organisms), pesticides, artificial fertilizers and herbicides just didn’t exist in the past. During the last century, farming techniques have changed considerably, but our bodies and biology haven’t. This is a big reason why you should eat organic food.

1. Organic Food Lowers Your Body’s Toxic Burden

Animals and plants labeled “organic” haven’t been treated with:

  • growth hormones
    pesticides
    antibiotics
    fertilizers from artificial ingredients or sewage
    herbicides
    ionizing radiation

It’s the same with animal products. The majority of modern farm animals are fed a mixture of corn and soy, and 90% of these are GMO. Their food is additionally filled with antibiotics and hormones. RBGH is given to dairy cows which is a genetically-engineered growth hormone to help increase milk production. This increase in milk production creates infections. They are also pumped with antibiotics. These antibiotics and hormones get carried to the dairy products that you eat.

Switching to organic foods will cut back pesticide buildup. This study from 2005 showed that in just 15 days, kids eating a mostly organic diet saw a drastic decrease in concentrations of pesticides.

2. They Are Non-GMO

GMOs are animals and plants made by combining DNA with various species using a means that would not naturally occur. They comprise an enormous share of corn, soy, beets, and alfalfa within the U.S.

Genetic engineering changes crops so they are pest- and weather-resistant. For example, GMO corn was combined with microorganisms to make it produce Bt-toxin, it’s own pesticide. Bt-toxin kills bugs by damaging the lining of their digestion tracts. This poison doesn’t just affect insects and but also damages humans, creating leaky gut.

3. Farming Organically is Better for the Planet

Farming organically uses animal manure, companion planting and crop rotation instead of artificial fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers to regulate pests and soil quality.

4. Organic Crops Have More Nutrition

People like to question the nutritionary advantage of organic vs conventional crops . Recent studies provide proof that organic foods are higher in nutrients and much lower in heavy metals and pesticides. They even show that the higher soil nutrition can increase cancer-fighting compounds which conventional farming practices reduce.

Crops treated with any amount or kind of chemicals will result in a negative reaction in your body. Organic crops are much more wholesome, and not to mention more tasty!

It may appear somewhat intimidating to switch to 100% organic. It may even be out of your budget. We recommend beginning one at a time and switch out more foods as possible. Here is where to start:

These are the most heavily genetically modified foods:

  • Soy
    Corn (including high fructose corn syrup, corn oil, corn syrup)
    Sugar Beets (most sugar is formed from this)
    Zucchini and yellow squash
    Papaya
    Canola (as in canola oil)
    Cotton (including cottonseed oil)
    Alfalfa

These are called The Dirty Dozen and they contain the largest amount of pesticides:

  • Apples
    Spinach
    Kale and Collard Greens
    Strawberries
    Peaches
    Grapes
    Cucumbers
    Cherry Tomatoes
    Celery
    Sweet Bell Peppers
    Imported Nectarines
    Imported Snap Peas
    Hot Peppers
    Potatoes

Avoid the above two lists as much as possible. Removing them from your diet first will give you the greatest increase in health.

These foods are called The Clean Fifteen because they have the least amount of pesticides. Remove them when you can:

  • Avocados
    Sweet peas (frozen)
    Eggplant
    Sweet corn
    Cauliflower
    Sweet potatoes
    Pineapples
    Cabbage
    Onions
    Papayas
    Kiwi
    Asparagus
    Mangoes
    Grapefruit
    Cantaloupe

When shopping, look for labels that say “USDA Certified 100% Organic.” Products marked “Organic” or “Made with Organic” could still contain some non-organic ingredients.
